“When I look at a child, I see a big soul in a small body.”

– Shakta Khalsa
The title of this week’s blog is a quote from Shakta Khalsa, my mentor and friend, and one of the world’s leading experts in children’s yoga. She is truly a giant in her field and I am privileged to have personally been trained and certified by her in Radiant Child® Yoga, the internationally known program for teaching children yoga, which she created.
Shakta has been in the world of children’s yoga since the 1970s, and has authored several highly-acclaimed books such as Fly Like A Butterfly: Yoga For Children and Kundalini Yoga. She studied under the direct guidance of Yogi Bhajan, Master of Kundalini Yoga, and she was named by Yoga Journal as one of the top five Kundalini Yoga teachers in the entire world.
Being a leading expert on children and yoga, Shakta is an especially sought-after teacher around the world and just recently returned from teaching in Zurich, Switzerland. In the next few months alone she will be teaching in Mexico, Quebec City, and all around the US. She is at the highest level (ERYT-500) of yoga training, a wonderful parent, and an AMS certified Montessori teacher.

But enough about her incredibly impressive bio! I recently shared some of my work in her recent Toronto class, showing the group some of the games we play at The Yoga Kids classes, like “Islands and Oceans” and “Green Light, Red Light”. It’s always fun and exciting for me to contribute to any class, whether the students are children, families, adults, or one of Shakta’s classes.
But what amazes me is how, despite her world fame and accomplishment, Shakta remains a generous soul, an unpretentious leader, and simply an exceptional human being.
There are some people in the world who, purely by their manner, their acts and their being, serve as inspiration to the rest of us. Shakta is one of those people.
To close, I would to offer Shakta’s complete quote about working with children, from which the quote above is excerpted. It inspires me. I hope it does the same for you, too.
“What I do with children is unique, because in everything I do I address the body, mind, and spirit of the child. And I do this in ways that speak to the child, ways that are fun as well as effective. When I look at a child, I see a “big” sould in a small body. Every time I relate to a child in that awareness, I find, without fail, that the child will reflect that same consciousness back to me.”
Endnote: Jyoti Bajaj, The Yoga Kids founder, will be teaching Shakta’s Radiant Child Yoga Instructor class this April 2013. For more information about the training, please call us at (647) 449-1150.
