Setting Positive Intentions for You and Your Child

At the beginning of each yoga class at The Yoga Kids, children set a positive intention for the class. They may pick something like, “I will do my best to follow instructions,” “I am going to breathe with awareness,” or “I am going to have fun in the yoga class.” They then monitor themselves throughout the class and evaluate how they did after the class. The children have done well with this and have said they enjoy setting intentions.
Setting intentions has many benefits. Just a few of them are increased motivation, optimism, and self-esteem. By focusing on the desired outcome for the day, children are able to live more fully in the present moment. It also helps them to be less reactionary, if a problem does arise.
Children can benefit from setting positive intentions at home, as well. They will probably need some guidance at the beginning to learn how to set positive intentions that will be their focus for the day. First, sit down with them and ask what they would like to experience today. It might be helpful to give them a short list of ideas, such as love, peace, fun, or success. Ask them to pick one thing.
